Dr. Peter Menzies has over 20 years of experience in Social Work. He has spent part of his career supporting his personal community of the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation peoples, among communities across northern Ontario. Peter is experienced with working with child welfare and income maintenance.
During this two-hour introductory workshop, participants will be introduced to issues confronting Indigenous Peoples in Canada through a public policy framework. central to this workshop is an overview examination of Indigenous Peoples’ experience with colonialism, and the struggle for self-determination. The impact of Canadian public policy on Indigenous Peoples will be examined, with a focus on the Indian Act, residential schools, child welfare, urban issues, intergenerational trauma, and healing, and developing partnerships with Indigenous communities. Through an adult learning model framework, the workshop leader will encourage participants to ask questions, clarify their understanding of Indigenous issues within a respectful conversational learning model
