Description

This presentation takes a fresh look at the Age-Friendly cities and Communities (AFCC) Framework-celebrating the progress made across British Columbia while shining a light on the work still to be done. Although AFCC has strengthened planning effors and raised awareness, meaningful challenges remain around implementation, long-term sustainability, equity, and integration with health and community systems.
At the heart of this conversation is a powerful but often overlooked asset: seniors' centres and community organizations. AS viatal social infrastructure, they play a critical role in fostering connection, resilience, and well-being. This presentation calls for a ore integreated, place-based approach-one that moves beyond strategy to action and builds truly inclusive, connected communities where healthy aging can thrive.

Dr. Mei Lan Fang is an Assistant Professor of Urban Aging at Simon Fraser University, jointly appointed in Urban Studies and Gerontology. Her research exmines age-inclusive environments, senior centres as vital community spaces, housing and care transition, climate resilience, and AgeTech ethnics. She works closely with seniors organizations to advance inclusive, community-drive policy and practice across British Columbia and internationally. Dr. Mei Lan Fang holds a PhD in Urban Studies from Heriot-Watt University, an MA in Public Health from Simon Fraser University, and a BSc (Honours) in Health Sciences from Simon Fraser University.
