Discover the beauty and artistry of Persian calligraphy in this hands-on workshop led by skilled calligrapher Mohammad Reza Kianmehr. Whether you're interested in art, lettering, design, or simply trying something new, this beginner-friendly workshop offers an introduction to one of the world's most elegant calligraphic traditions.
Learn about the history and cultural significance of Persian calligraphy while becoming familiar with its traditional tools and materials. Through guided practice, you'll explore the fundamentals of working with a traditional calligraphy pen, including how to hold it, control the angle of the nib, and create the distinctive strokes that give Persian calligraphy its graceful flow. You'll also experiment with essential techniques such as pressure control, line direction, rhythm, and composition.
By the end of the workshop, you'll create your own Persian calligraphy artwork to take home and gain an appreciation for the creativity, craftsmanship, and meditative qualities that make this art form so enduring. No previous experience is required.
All materials are provided upon payment of a $10.00 fee to the instructor at the workshop. Participants will also have access to the instructor's tools for the duration of the workshop.
Meet Your Instructor
Mohammad Reza Kianmehr is a Persian calligrapher with more than 40 years of experience practicing and teaching traditional Persian calligraphy. Rooted in the classical Nasta'liq and Shekasteh Nasta'liq styles, his work also explores contemporary artistic expression through mixed media and mirror art. Since moving to Canada, he has taught Persian calligraphy to students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and has shared his work through workshops and exhibitions with organizations including the Richmond Hill Cultural Centre and Meridian Arts Centre. Passionate about cultural exchange through the arts, he enjoys introducing people to the beauty, creativity, and meditative qualities of Persian calligraphy in an engaging and accessible way.
