Discover the timeless beauty of Persian calligraphy in this hands-on workshop led by skilled calligrapher Mohammad Reza Kianmehr. Participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of this artform and become familiar with traditional tools and materials. You will learn the fundamentals of working with a traditional pen, including how to hold it, control the angle of the nib, and how to create the distinctive strokes that give Persian calligraphy its graceful character. Through guided practice, you’ll explore essential pen techniques such as pressure control and line direction. Participants will apply these techniques to create a simple Persian calligraphy composition. By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a finished piece to take home, along with a deeper appreciation for the artistry, rhythm, and meditative nature of Persian calligraphy. No previous experience is required.
All materials provided upon payment of $10 fee to instructor at workshop. Participants will also have access to the instructor’s tools for the duration of the workshop.
Meet Your Instructor
Mohammad Reza Kianmehr is a Persian calligrapher with more than 40 years of experience in traditional Persian calligraphy. His work is rooted in the classical Nasta’liq and Shekasteh Nasta’liq styles while also exploring contemporary artistic expression through mixed media and mirror art. Since moving to Canada, he has been teaching Persian calligraphy to students from diverse cultural backgrounds and has presented workshops and exhibitions in collaboration with cultural organizations, including the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts and Meridian Arts Centre. His passion is to share the beauty, history, and philosophy of Persian calligraphy with the wider community in an engaging and accessible way.
