Sketching Spaces: Architectural Drawing with Hareem Ahmed

In this cozy and creative one-day workshop, fine art and architectural illustrator Hareem Ahmed (B. Architectural Design) will guide participants through the process of transforming a reference photo into a meaningful portrait of “home.” Architectural drawing is the art of sketching buildings and spaces, focusing on shape, detail, lines, and personality rather than perfection, making it a fun and mindful way to see familiar places in a new light. Learn the basics on how to read proportions, apply sketching and inking techniques, and use colour to bring your chosen space to life on paper – whether it’s the place you grew up in, your apartment building, the family cottage, a favourite restaurant or café, or any place that feels like home. Perfect for beginners, this workshop focuses on foundational architectural drawing skills while encouraging a personal, expressive touch. Please bring printed photos as a reference for your chosen place. Use of all tools and materials for the duration of the workshop is included in registration fee, including toned gray paper, drawing pencils, fine line markers, gel pens, and high quality coloured pencils. Bring a bagged lunch.

Hareem Ahmed is a Toronto-based visual artist and architectural illustrator with a background in Architecture Design (B.Arch). Working with toned gray paper, fine line markers, white gel pens, and coloured pencils, she creates detailed illustrations that blend precision with warmth. Her work highlights the character of iconic buildings and storefronts, capturing textures, light, and the subtle stories found in everyday spaces. Through her art, Hareem invites viewers to slow down, notice their surroundings, and connect more deeply with the places they love.
