Description
Each year since 2019, Niverville Communities in Bloom, a not-for-profit community volunteer group, in partnership with the TC Energy Build Strong program and the Town of Niverville, has planted trees on newer streets in Niverville in an effort to increase the town’s tree canopy. Each year approximately 60 trees have been planted as an investment in beautification and shade canopy along with the other benefits of trees such as protection from weather and climate change, as well as provide habitats for species of birds, insects, and pollinators essential to the environment.
TC Energy’s Build Strong program provides a grant to successful community applicants which funds the purchase of the trees and stakes and the Town of Niverville digs the holes and provides the mulch and top soil.
Eligibility will depend on whether the lot frontage provides enough room for a tree and if there is no infrastructure (electrical boxes, underground utilities) in the way. If your lot has a potential problem, you will be consulted to discuss.
The requirements for each homeowner are: to maintain the tree – watering, fertilizing, weeding and pest control; sign the waiver; and help plant it. Tree planting for the entire street will happen on May 23 in a time frame of 1-2 hours. Knowledgeable people will be there to give guidance and help but we ask homeowners to set aside 1-2 hours to help plant their tree and assist with neighbors who may be unable. In past years we have seen this street tree planting day bring the street community together.
