An exploration into the refined world of Mughal miniature portraiture - far more than simple images, these intricate, small-scale masterpieces were “read” in a specific manner that determined whether a portrait was successful. This program traces the rich history of the Mughal imperial workshop (atelier) and offers a glimpse into the mindset of the original 16th and 17th-century viewers, revealing how these portraits were intimately handled, studied, and appreciated by emperors and elites. Through a small sketching exercise, we will also learn how to draw the proportions of the human face. No drawing experience necessary!
Optional: bring an item that ties in with the topic to share your story with others (e.g., a memory, a photograph, an object, etc.).
