Still Life Drawing & Painting: Acrylic or Oil

This studio course develops drawing and painting skills by working from life. Students strengthen visual perception by learning to translate real objects into structured compositions. Foundational drawing skills, including proportion, value, and spatial relationships, are covered as the basis for painting. Students learn to organize canvas space through strong composition and to simplify forms into clear shapes, color masses, and light patterns.

Instruction then focuses on acrylic or oil painting techniques such as brush handling, paint application, layering, and edge control. Emphasis is placed on understanding paint behavior and using it expressively to build form, light, and atmosphere. By the end of the course, students will be able to create well-composed still life paintings from life; Students are encouraged to bring objects from home to add meaning and individuality.
