Sweewa (Joseph Kambeitz)
MASTER CARVER, JEWELLER, & ENGRAVER
Born in 1944, Sweewa is a member of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwikwetlem) First Nation. His traditional name means small eulachon in the downriver dialect of
hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. With over 60 years of artistry, he began carving at 16 and joined the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University of Art & Design) in 1962. Sweewa is mainly self-taught and combines modern techniques
with a traditional Salish style. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge, mentoring, and community.
