Description

Learn to draw and paint beautiful Blue Jays, majestic owls and other Canadian birds in an impressionistic style watercolour painting. You can learn a variety of watercolour techniques such as wet in wet, wet on dry and dry brush. Use fine brushes to capture details, create texture for feathers and add highlights. Step-by -step demonstrations and photo references will be provided each week. This class is open to all skill levels. Supplies are not included. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Please note: This class will be held at Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre, 333 Erie Ave.

Watercolours supplies can be purchased at Staples or Michael's.

Watercolour paints
  • Cadmium yellow or (New gamboge, perm. Yellow deep)
  • Perm. Rose or other pinky red colour
  • Cobalt blue or ultramarine blue
  • Manganese or Cerulean blue
  • Indigo blue (this plus burnt umber or sepia makes black for chickadee)
  • Burnt umber
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Raw Sienna or yellow ochre
  • Lamp black
  • White gouche
(I may use sepia or raw umber, but these are not necessary)


Paint brushes
  • #0 or #1 or #2 small round brush for detail work
  • #1 rigger (branches and detail)
  • #8 and #12 round

Other material
  • Watercolour Paper (at least 7” by 9” cold press or rough with some cotton rag)
  • Palette (with large mixing area)
  • Paper towel
  • Masking tape
  • Support board (foam core, plexiglass, etc..)
  • Water container
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Sharpener
  • Sketch paper for practice
